Rewriting the Archives

This body of work is based on a collection of Ektachrome slides that were given to me by my uncle some years back. The origin and purpose of these slides are a mystery to me, yet they have intrigued me ever since I received them. In these treasured slides are the memories once lived out by my uncle; a magical history from my blood relative filled with interesting strangers and lush landscapes. From the first viewing of these slides, my wish was to become a part of them- to interact with a part of his life in order to understand my own in a clearer way. These images are a method of time travel as I perform within the “readymade” slide locations. I interact with the places and strangers from this past moment in time, re-imagining the possibility for a narrative, his past melding with my present. As the performances commence with images transmitted from a slide projector, I realize that I am only interacting with rays of light and splashes of color on the flat surface of the wall, leaving me lonely and longing; in a space of the contemplation between the distance of me and my imagined “home” as I re-write these archives.

These images are all “live composites” where the slide is being projected as the background and I am lighting my subject (myself) in the same space. These are all analogue images with no digital post production composite work.
